Utah’s most extraordinary Early Jurassic discovery
The St. George Dinosaur Discovery Site is a nonprofit museum dedicated to preserving, researching, and sharing one of the most significant fossil tracksites in the world. Our team of scientists, educators, volunteers, and community partners works together to bring prehistoric times to life for visitors of all ages.
OUR STORY
In 2000, local resident Dr. Sheldon Johnson uncovered a set of unusual impressions while leveling land on his farm. What he found would be revealed as one of the best-preserved Early Jurassic tracksites ever discovered—a window into a 200-million-year-old lakeshore filled with dinosaurs, fish, plants, and other ancient life.
To protect these extraordinary fossils, the City of St. George partnered with us to build a museum directly over the discovery site. LaVerna Johnson, Sheldon’s wife, was key in raising the funds needed from federal, state, and local channels. The St. George Dinosaur Discovery Site opened to the public in 2005 and has been expanding scientific research, exhibits, and educational programs ever since.
